My Heart Like a Kick Drum

Many of you have noticed, that I love playing music in my classroom: Enya and Michael Nyman for the DO NOWs, George Winston for writing time, and usually something more upbeat for our transitions. Lately my go-to favorite has been The Avett Brothers’Kick Drum Heart.”

Why “Kick Drum Heart”?

  1. You have exactly 42 seconds until the chorus. That is when you should have your materials ready to go and be ready to work.
  2. The chorus is a simile. Here read the lyrics to see if you can figure out what the simile says literally and what it means figuratively:

Kick Drum Heart

The footprints over the snow
The fabric of all the lonely
C-covering only
The fables and hands
The rest is out in the cold
Holding the last of the season
F-F-F-F freezin’

Yeeaaaah!

My my my heart like a kick drum
My my heart like a kick drum
My my heart like a kick drum
My my love like a voice

We’re walkin’ into the field
We’re walkin’ into the forest
The moon is before us
Up above
We’re holdin’ hands in the rain
S-sayin words like I love you
Da-da do you love me?

Yeaaaah!

My my my heart like a kick drum
My my heart like a kick drum
My my heart like a kick drum!
My my love like a voice

Mother Mary heard us approaching her door
Though we didn’t make a sound

There’s nothing like finding gold
within the rocks hard and cold
I’m so surprised to find more
Always surprised to find more

I won’t look back anymore
I left the people that do
It’s not the chase that I love
It’s me following you

My my heart like a kick drum
My my heart like a kick drum!
MY MY HEART LIKE A KICK DRUM!
MY MY LOVE LIKE A VOICE!

My my heart like a kick drum…

P.S. Your humble teacher saw The Avett Brothers at the Santa Barbara Bowl last night. I filmed a clip of them playing the song, but I accidentally deleted it. (Obviously, I don’t have a career as a cinematographer waiting for me.) Here’s the you tube video by someone with more filming talent than me:
